Project23

Tuesday 25th November 2008 marked the start of a new era for youth work at The Link.  The youth programme was re-launched with a new name, Project 23, and new activities.  Since then there have been continuing developments and the youth team is always keen to welcome young people to the project.

We provide a safe and welcoming drop-in centre facility for young people.  Facilities include coffee bar social area with audio visual systems and table games, as well as a games room with a variety of activities on offer. Relationship building, reactive support, mentoring support, and more structured youth programmes are developed in consultation with the young people. This is done through a variety of methods including residentials, and both group and one to one sessions. We actively promote volunteering, provide ongoing training and have built a committed team of volunteers, a vital area that enables us to provide a high level of service.

Face Your Fears

Saturday 27th February 2010 saw Project 23 making its way to Castlewellan Forest Park to take part in “Face Your Fears” confidence and self-esteem building activity day organised by Life: One Great Adventure. 16 young people and 4 staff took part in the event. During the day the young people were presented with activities that pushed their expectations of what they thought they could achieve and beyond the limits they place on themselves.  Among the activities were bouldering and mountain biking, and both were extremely challenging and encouraged everyone to move out from their comfort zone.

Football can be a great tool for a youth worker. If you have a group of young men and you throw in a football, chances are they will soon have hoodies as goal posts and be kicking lumps out of each other in no length of time.

Recently we have become concerned about the attitude of some of our young people towards members of migrant community. On challenging these views we found there was little understanding of different cultures and how they might be similar to ours. We as a youth team felt that we needed to help them bridge the gap.
